I have a friend who does this. Like, she ignores her body's needs. She never drinks water, or anything at all.. and barely eats. She doesn't have obsession with weight though. Is this a form of self-injury? I want to look it up so I know how to help her.

Well, I pick up on things. It might be weight, but it doesn't seem like it. It just seems like she doesn't care about herself. Like she wants to be sick. I know she use to cut.. not sure if she still does or not. So, I guess it must be a form of self-injury. Is this type called anything? Thanks for all the responses, guys!

It's known as bullemia or anorexia. Anorexia is where you severely limit what you eat, and bullemia is where you try to get rid of what you are through either forcing yourself to be sick, abusing laxitives or even exercising too much. It may seem like your friend doesn't have an obsession with her weight, but she probably does, but is very private about it. It's important to know it's not weight that's the cause of these conditions, but other big problems. You should try to talk to a school councellor or someone like that who can help you work out how to talk to her about this. It's important that you stick by her and support her in this, as she will need your friendship.

Well that depends, Is she telling you this, or are these things you are picking up on from being around her. If she is telling you these things it is most likely a need for attention or something else. If these are things you noticed it could be an eating disorder. Those with true eating disorders do not talk about them to friends or family....it is an in the closet type problem. Just because she tells you she is not obsessed with her weight not not mean this is the truth.

Well, it is self injury. I won't even start on how bad the lack of water and nourishment is.

On an extreme scale, I would say it's borderline suicidal. If she's actually making herself sick, then anorexia is the problem.

It has not think to do with anorexia, it has everything to do with self hate. Self loathing.
She probably wasn't treated very well at some point in time and because of that has little to no self worth and no self esteem.
Masochism.
A death wish.

well if she's deliberately trying to make herself sick---in other words, taking deliberate steps for the purpose of making herself sick---that would definitely be self-injury....i dont know if theres a more specific name that touches on this specific type of self-injury....talk to someone that you trust with this information, or just do a search on "self-injury" or "self-inflicted injury". good luck, and that's great that youre trying to help your friend.

anorexia. maybe, their are some people who enjoy pain and what not. Like how some people like self mutilation maybe she (for some weird reason) likes the feeling of it. But, she should stop, because sometimes people get in the habit of that and becomes addicted to it. If she continues to do so she will begin to weigh less and less and it might cost her, her life. Seriously.

Depression and seriously low self esteem. Sounds like she feels she's not worth caring for.
