Honey, You did the worst thing you possibly could have! I would have done the same thing, you were harsh. Next time, tell her you adore her figure, but the clothes aren't flattering to your beautiful curves.
You now need to make it up to her. Bring her flowers, bring her chocolate. write a poem for her, Telling her that she is your world, that you are lost without her. that she is your night and day, without her you are incomplete.
no joke, you need to kiss some serious ***. and you could even give her the best sex she's ever had if she'll give into you that is.

It isn't your honesty that's the problem, it's your cruel way of saying it. You should have said, 'Yes, it does make you look bigger than you are'. If a man told me I look like a hippo in a tutu, he'd likely have trouble walking for awhile, and that is an understatement. That is so mean. What the heck did you expect?
There is a huge difference between truth and meaness. Think about it, you made her feel bad about herself and you hurt her feelings by saying such a terribly mean thing to her. I wouldn't blame her if she dumped you over it. I would sure be thinking about it. You act like an a** and wonder why she's upset. Sorry or not, your behaviour is unforgivable in my opinion.
And just for the record, I have no problem wrapping my "pretty little head" around the truth. My husband of 16 years always tells me if something makes me look bigger than I am, but he loves me so he is kind about it. I always tell him when I ask, better you tell me the truth now than some catty chick at the bar.

You need to sugarcoat the truth. Try this approach for the truth version - tell her you think that she would look better in the black dress or a pair of khakis and a shirt. Women don't like the truth when it comes to looks. We're all very insecure with our looks in the first place and to hear it from a loved one only rubs salt into the wound. Just be sweet to her. That's all a woman really wants when she asks those questions.

It wasn't that you told the truth. It's how you gave the answer
Women are very, very emotional in general and don't take comments like you gave very well. They can't handle it.
Yes, they want you to say that everything they wear looks great on them. However, we guys know that ain't always the case.
The next time she asks you such a question and you think the outfit doesn't work for her, just say something like "that outfits doesn't compliment you" or "it's not you" and leave it at that. The key is keeping your answer simple, but not too simple.
Now go apologize for giving the answer like you did, but let her know she's still beautiful....but that outfit doesn't compliment her beauty.

Telling the truth is not a bad answer, however there are many ways to rephrase your answer so that its not offensive to the person. And you're not being tactless . Before answering and you want to tell the truth, choose the right words or better yet read the dictionary to add more words to your vocabulary.

okay, so ur gf asked for the truth, doenst meen u lie to her but in girl language it means tell me im beautiful. and yes u told her the truth but in a really meen way even if she wasnt ur gf but a friend of urs that would be pretty messed up and from what u told me it looks like u hurt her pretty badly, a girls image is really improtant to her and it makes up almost half their self esteem so my tip is to say ur sorry and apologize by getting her flowers...or soemthign that may let her forgive u , and for 2 years thats a pretty long relationship to be ruined by what u did. andu couldve told her to wear another dress or soemthign because this dress doesnt suit her but teling her that she looks liek a hippo in a tutu is really messed up!! good luck anyway!

The truth can be phrased in many different ways. Next time she asks you how she looks, say it wisely and more subtlly like, "honey, you've got great curves. I think this dress would better suit your figure." Smile, give her a kiss and walk out of the room.

hahaha..your like my patner ..honesty is the way to go...she needs a sense of humour..and she asked for the truth so she should be able to accept it...
now me and my patner always talk to eachother like that..so neither of us take offence to it..but we tell the truth...if we look horrible in what we are wearing..we'll tell eachother.
Your girlfriend obviously got offended..so next time she askes you..if she ever asks you again..just say " ..is there anything else you can wear?..i dont think that type of clothes brings out your best features"
