Do you think it's just as old as sex itself, like they say prostitition is the oldest profession and all. I just wonder who and how would someone even think that up?

I am sure it's as old as sex itself. I can certainly see how someone would think it up. Even children are naturally curious about each other's genitals, didn't you play "doctor" or "show and tell" when you were small? Weren't you fascinated with the way boys stood and pointed their penis to pee, or your dad grew hairy all over and had to shave? I know I was.

I can just see the cavemen...or Adam and Eve, whichever you prefer having oral. I mean, somehow lacking any sort of instruction manual they figured out vaginal sex, which seems a lot more complicated given that tab A must be inserted into slot B and moved around in a rhythmic manner.

If they figured that out, then the idea to have oral sex seems pretty simple, the other person has different parts than you do, you want to look at them, touch them, feel them, explore them. And by doing that, you get up close to inspect them, notice appealing moisture, textures, (hopefully) enticing smells and voila! Oral sex came about. You can still see it in man's caveman-like approach in grabbing the back of a woman's head and motioning toward his groin, that hasn't changed since the dawn of time I'm sure.

I just realized - maybe you are just a teenager so I won't go on and pollute your mind with these visions. But if you are still a teen I will tell you that whatever wild (to you) thing you can think up I guarantee that someone has already done it, long ago. Still, whatever it is will be a first time for YOU, so enjoy all your "first times" while you can.

I personally think 12 years old is way to young to have any kind of sexual contact. But kids are having sex younger and younger these days. Oral sex can be less risky then having sexual intercourse, but there are some things that virgins can acquire with out having sex. Such as cold sores, hepatitis or hiv. Cold sores are caused by oral herpes, they are contagious and can be passed to the genitals. Any of those infections could be passed on the moment some one has oral sex or sexual intercourse. There is still a risk of contracting an std, as an above poster stated, stds don't discriminate against age. It can affect some one that young emotionally (specially if some thing goes wrong) and 12 year olds don't take responsibility for their actions very well. Sex is a serious thing at any age, keep talking to them about sex is she going to be his girl friend for a long time after having oral sex...or is this only going to be for fun then move on. If they don't have any infections that can be passed during sex then they shouldn't be able to get an std. But he does have a couple of things to think about if he really wants to have oral sex with this girl.
