Listed on "craigslist" is an add for a "98 honda civic, 130k, $3,300" Not exactly written like that, add offers that he is only owner and has service records. I emailed the man on the car since it is listed in Oklahoma City, asked him could we arrange a meeting. This is a brief reply of what he said "The car is in good condition and nothing is wrong to his knowledge, and he gave me the vin number. He is in Finland he was called back from army reserves for peace maintence says he bought land and decided to work there so moved his family there and will take too long to register the vehicle there so is selling back in the us, I offered him $2,500 he immediately accepted stating that it would be shipped to my door within 3 days from the us air military and that we would do the transaction through ebays vehicle purchase-ebay will then hold the funds for 10 days while i put the car in my name and after that is done will release the funds to him.

This could be a legit, but with that much money on the line, better to find something a little more local. That's my advice, take that for what it's worth.

Craigslist is for LOCAL ads. Just assume anyone advertising anything more than about 200 miles away is a scam. 99 percent of the time it is.

This is DEFINITELY a scam.

The US Military (and the Air Force specifically) doesn't have a significant presence in Finland. That there is enough to set my scam detector off. It isn't impossible, but it is HIGHLY unlikely.

Also, the military will not ship a vehicle for the purpose of selling it. They aren't going to ship it to YOU, the buyer. That is proof, in my eyes.

If was for real, and he was serious about selling a car, he'd have someone at home do it for him. That's what powers of attorney are for, and that's got to be safer than trying to complete a 3000 dollar transaction from overseas.

SCAM. Flag it, and move on. ONLY DEAL LOCALLY when you're on Cragislist.

What the person told you is true, it is possible to have it shipped Stateside, and you can, if you and he are PayPal members, make payment that way. I am not sure about the issue of holding the money for 10 days, nor if he can "re-ship" the car if you don't like it, but I personally would not do the deal. It can be very difficult to get MAC transportation in some areas, and you might have to pay an
"up front" amount in order to get the car picked up and shipped. You might also be liable for any damages that happened while the car was in transit, or damaged while being on or off-loaded.

well, that car has a lot of miles on it but if you really need it get it checked out by a good mechanic when you get the chance, and if theres something wrong with it let him know about it. I saw a $10,000 2006 Nissan Altima on ebay for sale once, not a thing was wrong with it, the miles on it were low and they only wanted a $200 deposit after the auction was over with, most people ask for a $500 deposit, so thats a great deal considering thats a good-looking car and plus it saves on gas mileage. good luck.

There are some unusual circumstances here, certainly. Is the US military really going to waste their time shipping some guy's used car? As long as the car arrives at your doorstep in three days though it sounds like you'll be ensured your money will still be in your hands, which is good. It would have been too risky for me to try though.

It sounds like a service man trying to tie up some loose ends here. The car is probably just fine.

It might not be a scam but is it really worth the risk? I know if it was me I wouldn't put myself through all that trouble.

It's sad that we can't trust people, but the term "Too good to be true" seems like it would apply.
