I have music, mostly classical lately, that plays for hours and is driving me up the wall. The only time I have peace from it is when I watch tv or go to sleep. I tried to read a book today and while I read, the music played in my mind as well. So naturally I can't concentrate on what I'm reading. My therapist suggested listening to the song/music repeatedly and then it will go away. That didn't work.

Anyone experience this or something similar? If so, what did you do to relieve it? If I have to take a med to help I'll do it b/c this, in addition to depression & anxiety, is too much to deal w/.

BTW: I also take Klonopin for the anxiety/sleep problems and it has had no effect on the compulsive music playing.

hearing music i believe is related to a anxiety disorder, caused by stress. i would talk to you doctor, about your problem, and maybe you need to be on another medication. i sometimes have this problem myself, and the last thing i want to do , is listen to the music in my head. i really question why you therapist would suggest that you listen to the music that is bothering you. i try to block out the music, not listen to it. eating properly, and especially exercise, is also good for you to do. hope this helps you

I wouldn't call it "sickness", i would prefer "Gift" or "talent"...

Every human has senses, 5 senses that used to study / work are visual (sight/eyes), auditory (hearing/ear), khinesthetic (moves and touch / muscels and skin), smell (nose), taste (tounge); even thou the scientist only sort for the first 3 for studying matter.
Every people has it (unless the handycaped) with a certain sensitifity, some are highest is visual and some is highest in auditory, etc.

before conclusions, there are other things...

human's mind are working in 3 stages categorized by consciusness, that is Conscius mind, semi-concius and unconcius, strangely the most powerfull are the semi and the un-conscius... what are thous?
* Conscius are when you're really thingking, when you're awake, when you command your body to do something, when you tell your hands and fingers to type on the keyboard, when you study things (read as example).
* Semi-Conscius are something that you do/think by habbits and reflects, even thou sometimes you could still contro it consciuslyy, like when someone trying to hit you and you do reflects (that's why a martial artist do reflects based on the art not like the common people), when someone do sleep walking, when you breathe, when you dream at sleep.
* Un-conscius are really abstract to be define, but one thing for sure commonly no human could control it (even thou i believe we could only it's as hard as straightnin g a wet threads), just example, your heart-beat, your diggestion, and avery of your organ.

Now, in this case i will only talk about the conscius and semi-consciusness, since the un-conscius will never disturb us.

Now, the relation of the senses and the consciusness...
* When your senses work in consciusness as when you're studying, it works very systematiccally (relative, depends on the individual), your conscius sense will do the best when you're studying,
* When your senses work in semi-sonsciusness, actually you could use it to help studying, but if you not control it, this will easylly distract you.

Now, in your case, probabbly your auditory are in both the conscius and semi-conscius, this is kind of rare since commonly people will only have 1 sense for 1 conscius level.
So, you will neeed to learn/study thing with your ear...
And when you sleep, you will need to have music in your room, at least untill you fall asleep (it would do better then having drugs).

btw, you said that the time you don't have music is only when you're sleeping and watching TV, but actually when you're watching V, they have music in it to support the scene...
I know so, since i was experienced to direct music for dance and theater.

Hope this help
Bless You

This is kinda like what i experienced once, I thought I was going to go insane, it's a type of tinnitus and some meds can cause it look up the side effects of your med on Internet and see if it caused this. It is usually described as ringing in the ear, however it can also be music. good luck also maybe see if doc will switch you to lexapro it seem to help a little. Mine only comes on during migraines now...

Try turning the sound down.
Just kidding! Yes, a lot of us have brains like this. What helps me is something else to distract my mind. This is based on the principle of conquering one idea with another idea. Reprogram your mind with something else, some other strong idea or mental image. After a few days, a nuisance song, etc. should subside. Could your brain be seeking musical expression?
If so, take music lessons.

hullo it seems that you are suffering from obsessive rumination of mental character in the shape of musical theme,it is based on a well known defense mechanism called undoing ,which is an ego defense mechanism used mostly in OCD,this undoing is a way in the unconscious to curb painful memories by using unseemly hollow process of undoing.
try to ask your therapist about some dynamic approach.
