If you drive, bi-focals allow you to see ahead and also read your car instruments. However, they are not so good for reading the newspaper because you will have to move your head up and down as you are using only the bottom part of your glasses. In this case, reading glasses are better.

I use both, depending on the situation.

All depends...if you want to keep putting on and taking off readers all day long, so be it. Bifocals allow you to wear your glasses all day...your reading power is there all the time.
