What do you think?
The NASCAR race at Indianapolis accumulates way more fans than in the indy 500.
And the Brickyard 400 isn't even NASCAR biggest race.
Do the math.

The Indy 500 is still the most watched racing event in the world. Daytona 500 is the third most watched in the US trailing the Indy 500, and the Brickyard 400. While us here in America would like to think that the rest of the world cares about stock car driving they really dont.
The Indy 500 is broadcast in over 200 countries, reaching over 325 million households worldwide, and that doesnt include radio broadcasts. If you want numbers look up the top ten attended sporting events in history and at the top of that list is the Indy 500 with over 400,000 people, next is the Brickyard 400 with 300,000, and then the U.S Grand Prix with over 200,000.
I am a racing fan, I like watching Indy cars as much as I like watching Nascar. I grew up across the street from the Brickyard, so its in my blood. Comparing a race that has been around for close to 100 years to one that just broke the 60 year mark is crazy. While the popularity of Open wheel racing in America is on the decline, its not on the decline on a world wide stage. Since Champ car drivers are now participating in the Indy 500 again, it will remain the signature race of the world.

The daytona 500 is the biggest race in the world. indy 500 is not even in the top 10 anymore. the problem is that there is a nascar race the same day. more people watch nascar in the world than f1 or indy put together. nascar only runs in the us but it gets more tv time then any other racing league around the world. true racing began in daytona and it will die there. so yes the daytona 500 is the biggest race of the year all over the world.

I did a quick search after reading this to see which does draw a bigger audience, and it is NASCAR. The Coca Cola 600 or whatever it's called these days that is ran on the same day ad the Indy 500 draws higher TV ratings.. and the purse for the Daytona 500 has grown to nearly double that of the Indy 500 in the last several years. ... so, maybe not the world, but at least in the US - Daytona and NASCAR are bigger than the Indy 500. Or so it appears to me...
on a side not, I do usually watch parts of the Indy 500, but I can't set thru the whole thing. It just isn't exciting to see cars that are driven by flipping a button to set pit road speed, that jack themselves up, etc.

Anymore it is. Since the split between IRL and Champ and the fact that bump day isn't as big as it used to be and the probability of the past couple of years not having a full field the Daytona 500 has become bigger than INDY. I think the purse for Daytona is larger too.

as for attendence wise the Indy 500 is the biggest and yes back many years afo more popular and watched on tv.. even though many years ago it was taped delay even in the 80's it was and so was the Daytona 500...but in more recent years the Indy 500 has fallen off in popularity due to the split they had about 8 years ago the Indy 500 is ATTENED by more people than the Daytona 500 but less watched on tv and not as popular as it used to be

No, of course not.
Even with their recent problems the Indianapolis 500 is still the biggest auto race in the world. I have attended the Indy 500 more than 20 times and each time more than 200,000 people were in attendance. They will draw that many again this year.
The Indianapolis 500 pays the largest purse, attracts the very best drivers and draws the largest crowd every year. The Daytona 500 pales in comparison. Just check the facts. The only other race that comes close to being a rival in that department is the Brickyard 400.
What a finish last year! Sam Hornish used his experience to just edge young Marco Andretti for the victory. Marco will win the Indy 500 one day I expect.
