An athiest is someone who simply doesn't believe in a god/gods.
An agnostic is NOT a fence sitter, an agnostic is simply someone who doesn't know if god/gods exsist or not and don't pretend that they do.
So, really, its all about preference. Some say that they don't believe, and some say that they don't know and don't care.

The difference isn't particularly important. The word "atheist" is a bit more common, and the generally understood meaning of the word is reasonably close to what either an atheist or agnostic actually believes.

I was an agnostic, until I came to yahoo answers. Now I'm an atheist. I hope that answers your question.

Atheist is a tricky word. I guess I would say that my belief in Yahweh is no greater than my belief in Apollo. Since the jury is not out on any deity, and I've decided that none of them exist, I'm an atheist, not an agnostic.
I'm quite sure that there is no God.

Agnostics believe that there may be a higher being, but that mankind does not know about it. Atheists do not believe in any sort of supernatural being.

What are you talking about? They're not necessarily separate.
One can be a gnostic theist, agnostic theist, agnostic atheist or gnostic atheist (or a deist, etc.).

While I can respect the attitude that "there's no way we can know in this lifetime", there is no evidence to support the god side of the fence they sit on.

Do you believe in flying invisible unicorns even though there is no evidence to support their existence? Of course not. You do not sit there and simply say, "I am undecided because I have seen no evidence that disproves their existence".
