Ok, people can be addicted to so many things. Casinos, Drugs, Alcohol etc. While participating in the addiction the person obviously knows that this is not good for them but they can't stop doing whatever it is they are doing for reasons unknown.

My question is, I have been in a relationship with someone for five years now. He and I are not good for each other. The relationship has been dragging me down for a long long time. I am fully aware of this. I know that I want more out of life that this relationship has or ever will offer me. I mean, it has even come to the point of him telling me that he wouldn't be bothered if I moved on or found someone new but for some reason unknown, I cant seem to let go. What is the deal?

He's who you have become comfortable with, whether it feels right or wrong. You're afraid of the unknown. Yes, it can be an addiction. Your mind reasons with you just the same. But you are a step ahead because you are aware. When one of you is ready, you'll both let go. Right now you're learning a lot about what you think is right and wrong in a good relationship. Hopefully you will allow this to benefit you in the future by making better choices for yourself.

You absolutely can be addicted to people. The same pattern of behavior that causes addictions to the other things you listed can cause the addiction to a person too. The first step in anything is realizing there is a problem. You haven't let go because you are afraid you can't make it on your own. You CAN. You don't need him or ANYONE else to be you. Keep telling yourself, you are going to be okay, when you want to call him or talk to him, think of something else or talk to someone else ANYONE else. Stay focused on not thinking about him. I know it is weird to say that, but it really does help, and before you know it, you are on your own and really don't think about him.

I think you two need time away from one another. I don't mean takeing a break. I mean go stay at a friends, or at your parents place, go for two weeks, no calls to your man or anything, Just before you leave tell him you're going to where ever and you'll be back on such a date. thats it thats all. He knows where you're going, and He knows you'll be back. thats all he needs. When you get back from you little vaca, he should possibly miss you, and if not, if you both realise time apart was too good, han you know it's time to seperate.

You are too possessive of this fellow that you don't want him to be with another woman; so you are willing to put up with anything.
