It kind of sounds like an Affenpincher or maybe a Brussels Griffon.

It sounds like it's probably a mutt or crossbreed if you don't know what breed it is. If it is a purebred, it could possibly be a Brussels griffon -- this breed has a short coat with a squashed-in nose and a long beard.
But since it's likely not a purebred, it could have poodle, schnauzer, pekinese, or pug in it.

how are we supposed to know what kind of dog it is when we cannot even see a picture---------we could use some more details, like size, shape, etc.
maybe a schnauzer, because you said a beard and schnauzers have hair around their faces that looks like a beard.
