I cannot believe how much time some people spend in this section! There are people here who have children, home school their children, just had a child, yet find time answering 30+ questions a day! You cannot be a “great parent” sitting in front of the computer all day long with children at home. While it is great to help others, your family should come first.
I have been answering questions in this section pretty much since Y!A has started. Some days I answer several questions(several to me is about 5), some days 1 or 2, some days none. I spend my weekends with my husband, family, and friends.
I have answered just over a thousand questions in over a year. Some of those, in this section, have answered thousands of questions in a lot less time than that!
I believe those who answer many questions per day, are spending their lives on Y!A because of the "Top 10 answerers". They want to be in the top 10 or are in the top 10 and want to keep their position or move up. It is a competition for them and they have become obsessed. They feel the more points the better. I bet if there was no top 10, you would see a huge drop in the number of questions these people answer.
For those who ask several questions per day, I almost feel sorry for them. I think that many of them are lonely or in need of attention and are using this category to get it.

While I rarely visit the pregnancy/parenting section, I do think some people are obsessed with Y!A. It's the near-instant responses and reactions and the idea that others actually care and want to comment on your questions/opinions. I have wondered and been a little concerned about some people who I think spend an excessive amount of time online. For me, personally, I go online late at night when my kids and husband are sleeping. If I'm on during the day it's just checking email. But I do know some parents who spend all day online. I wonder how they can stay connected with their children and spouse/partner. I don't think it's possible.

One of the things I've learned about people as I've gotten older, is that people can have obsessions about ANYTHING! So why should this site be any different?! Of course- you're right. Anyone in their right minds shouldn't be HERE now- reading or writing THIS; they should be out doing something constructive. But THIS is the REAL world...- and complain as you will, this place is where some people get hung up on. I look on the "bright side", -it could be WORSE; I could be swallowing down all the news I can get about Brittany Speares just now... :)

I sit at the computer a lot of the day because if I sit anywhere else my son wants to nurse and if I leave the room he screams. We just can't seem to get into a good schedule with my husband's current work schedule so naps are all over the place. Everyone is cranky and housework is suffering.
So I spend too much time online.

Not ALL who are on the parenting segment are actual parents yet.........I am a waiting parent, meaning, I am adopting and waiting for my placement. For me, it helps to obtain opinions, positive or negative about parenting and also the adoption questions. Information, is information, plus, it allows people to "express" their opinions, or feel included in a community.
Do I think actual parents should be on 24/7? NO, they should be finding other creative ways to express themselves, with their kids, meaning, games, teaching, having fun, etc., but, like you said, whatever floats your boat!

Having a number of coworkers with at home spouses, who called many times a day, I think adults need adult communication. And this is a great place to get it. They could be at much worse sites.

Nope, I'm not obsessed with Y!A, I just love to answer the questions and read others answers. I have no small children and plenty of time on my hands so I do spend several hours a day on this site.

1 I work on-line, so dip in to this and other sites on a frequent basis, but it's far from the only thing on my computer.
2 No kids, just cats, but pregnant -- and frequently too tired (but insomniac) to do anything else.
3 That said, yes, it's kinda pathetic...

I am obsessed but not on here all the time. Just when I cannot sleep from pain. The religious section has frequent fliers, also.
