Could be that he couldn't fall asleep because he wasnt used to you being there and had nothing better to do. However, it was more likely that he was admiring you and thinking how lucky he was that he had you sleeping in his bed. That's what I was doing last time I did that. Or hoping you'd wake up so he could get some action ...... also done that myself.

It most likely sounds to me that he may be in love with you and he just can't take his eyes off of you.
