If you're looking for Chinese characters for a tattoo I would suggest otherwise. Chinese is one of the most difficult languages to master and just because you have two symbols, (hypothetically) one meaning "john" and the other "doe" together they might mean something completely different.
I would say look for imagery that can convey your message or get it in a language you know and use.

Here are a few from some well known websites, the most common chinese imagery used in tattooing is probably the chinese dragon, a lot of the rest is often confused with japanese style tattooing. The difference is that chinese style has more colour and and actual background in it and less of those stripey shade blocks behind it.

I would look into books, story books or paintings....If I'm understanding your question correctly, you don't want actual Chinese put on you but a scene?
re: characters...if your wife is Chinese from China...then the written out name that she knows is the correct one. I am still not clear as to how tattoo studios transform an English name into a Chinese one because that's not possible. I am not sure if they make up a name?
But storybooks and books on paintings would be your best bet re: background scenery.
