Something in the food may give you an addictive reaction to it. Or you might simply be deficient in a certain nutrient that this type of food provides and so your body creates a "craving for it" in an attempt to get you to consume more of that lacking nutrient, mineral, enzyme, etc.

For example, people with a potassium deficiency might crave foods high in potassium such as bananas, cantaloupe, grapefruit, oranges, tomato or prune juice, honeydew melons, prunes, molasses and potatoes.

I don't know for sure, but I think your body is needing something this particual food containes, which tells your brain to send a craving for it. If you want a dill pickle, your body simply needs extra salt. If you want ice cream, your body needs sugar. I believe thaking a multi vitamin daily will help with cravings. Only my opinion. But if you really crave a food, go for it. Can't hurt you. Now you have me wanting Mexican food. Too late to go out and get some. Thanks.

A real craving is because your body need a particular thing. Sometimes you can crave something you normally don't particularly like When I was pregnant with my first child, I craved dirt!! My obstetrician told me it was because my body needed iron. You don't have to be pregnant to have cravings, though.

quota of those ingedients your body needs hasnt topped yet.

regularly eating a variety of foods that covers all necessary vitamins and minerals cuts down on cravings.
except for chips and sweets... those are necessities :)
