I snowboard at various places on the east coast (Vermont, New York, Massachusetts) and have seen it here at some of the bigger mountains. It mainly seems to be bras with the occasional panty thrown in for variety, I guess. I have also spoken to friends who have seen it at resorts in other parts of the country, but no one has an explination.

Seems that it is a 15+ year tradition at Fernie by the instructor staff. A specific tree just above the Snow Creek Condos on the Elk Quad chair gets decorated with all sorts of underwear on New Years Eve. There is even some men's underwear too - but the panties usually have the previous owners' name written on the butt in black Sharpie (or some other permanent marker). The tree has a good assortment this year - was visiting in late January - very festive! Not sure how they are placed so high up the tree with the name carefully viewable from the chair lift - that is truly a mystery! There is no way to climb it (hemlock, so it loses its needles) and no way that they are tossed to that height with such accuracy.

Blame those frisky instructors that are staying in rez on the hill for the season (mostly Aussie nationality may have something to do with it too).

Now it is just a novelty. It used to be a tradition at some place (s?). I am not sure where, but they had the panty tree. I don't know what the significance really was, but it was a quirk of that particular place that started spreading to other mountains. I think other mountains just wanted to be cool, show they had some funky character. But it just made them look like coat tail grabbers.

maybe they are dirty or not the right size? I live out west 6 miles from a resort where the kids did that. I guess they want to show the world how sexy they are. Who cares?

I know of a lady calling the resort complaining about she thought it was too revealing for her kids. Criminy does that lady ever buy lingerie and took her kids with her or does she get her stuff delivered by mail in a plain brown wrapped package?

We used to have an underwear tree at Mount Southington. It was just something that one of the instructors started to make the trees look pretty. It didnt indicate anything, but the trees were ugly without leaves, so they made "artificial leaves" by throwing underwear on the tree. :p

People with too much energy find it very amusing. I've also seen beads (like for Mardi Gras) in the trees. Can't say I go for it, but it's interesting...

My own answer to this - Stupidity and immaturity.

I live near Lake Champlain and while we don't get the bras, we instead see lots of beer cans or bottles stuck onto the branches of trees.

For those who think it's cool, it is littering plain and simple.

I know...it's funny, huh? It's the Mardi Gras spirit on the slopes...that's my only answer!

I think its to show that they stop skiing or snowboarding to have sex outdoors. That marks where they did it.
