I'm taking a trip to South East Asia this summer, and when I travel back to US, I would like to bring back some live fish with me for my aquariums. Does anybody know a good way to carry the fish on airplane? I never traveled on airplane before so I don't know much about the regulations.

*EDIT*: All the fish I bring back are legal and already available here in US, just much cheaper.

I would think they would need to quarintine any animal coming back into the US, but I am no expert. Maybe you could have it shipped to you.

First you need to check with customs to see if you can bring the fish back with you. Next, check with the airline to see what their policy is for transporting live fish. Some airlines won't transport any animals of any kind.

While I've never traveled with live fish, I have seen the way they do it. Basically, they put the fish in a bag just like they do when you purchase one at a store. You then carry that bag onto the plane, after going through all the necessary security checks.

Although the fish is aviliable in the US, you may not be able to bring it back with you. Many aquarium fish are bred at special fisheries to ensure that they are free of microorganisms that could be harmful to our ecosystem.

Contact the airline. I would think you pack them the way you would pack fish for transport on land as well except more durable to go through all the rigor of airplane travel.

You should be able to bring the fish, but you should contact customs officials of both countries to make sure you can export the fish and import it. You may have to have forms from the exporting country. Peruse the US Customs and Border Protection website and send them an email for your questions.

You are not allowed to carry liquids of planes because three ounces of liquid can cause an explosion. You have to travel with them in the the cargo hold and they might die.

uhh
I don't think you're allowed to do that. You're not supposed to import species that don't exist in another country. I think that if you can get thoese fish in the US, you'd be better off...
