I was told that I would have to pay a monthly fee for the gps unit to work. It doesn't sound right, but I am new to the gps.

No, for a regular gps unit you do not have to pay for it, however if you get a service like for your car with the talking and directions, yes, you do have to pay for it, but it also upgrades. GPS is downloaded straight from the satilites and there is not a charge for the service.

The answer is for basic GPS you do not have to pay a monthly fee.
The only fees you would have to pay is for special units that feature real time traffic monitoring and this is generally optional. The traffic monitoring allows the GPS to re-route in real time around traffic jams and accidents.
I have a Garmin Nuvi 350 that works great. It is free to use. If I wanted the traffic monitoring I would have to pay $60 for a one year suscription on top of extra hardware.

No, you don't have to pay any monthly fee to receive the GPS signal from the satellites. Just pay for a GPS and you are ready to go.

no, there is no monthly charge for GPS units...at least not handheld or MOST auto-windshield units.
Certain CELL PHONES that offer GPS service DO charge for the service, however, and services like OnStar in GM vehicles have GPS and charge a monthly for certain features (open doors, road service, etc.)
