What is the Illuminati? Does it really exist?

A real answer to this would take a longgggg time. I'll sum up. They were a German group of Masons....they had a comparatrively global outlook for that time...and they had roots...or claimed roots...into some older organizations like the knites templar (all the masonic lodges did that sort of thing).

The illuminatus were supressed by the German government....as being revolutionaries and anti-Christian. There were rumors that it persisted....this went on for hundreds of years. The group that Hitler formed the Nazi party out of....the Thule society...used to claim lineage from the illuminatus. This isn't really true...but giving long roots makes you look bigger.

An American far right wing group that are very isolationist....called the Simon Birchers..... taught that the Illuminati are still around...and are behind communism. It's conspiracy theory stuff...and no, it isn't true. There have been joke groups that called themselves the illuminatus to make fun of the right wing crazies. There was a book...a very cool, but weird book, called Illuminatus by Robert Anton Wilson which was...well, it;s hard to explain, but it had LOTS of conspiracy theories at the center of the plot....among them the Illuminatus.
