start by looking in the lost and found section of every newspaper in the US, then call every animal shelter, then go out on every street of the US and count how many stray dogs you see running around, and if you catch one and get it back to its owner, count that one as lost, and then found..........
I don't think that one can be calculated with any accuracy.

Well, this isn't going to help you but pets aren't like kids. I think the percentage of actual canine runaways would be minute. Dogs very often wander off and many can't find their way home. Others are stolen or meet their demise while traveling. No idea how many dogs are found annually either but I do know its a good thing to contact your vet when your dog is missing. We get many strays where I live and we always call the area vets to see if their masters have called in searching for them. Having your pets tattooed or microchipped will help insure their return back home.

Hope someone finds your answer for you.

Personally, Most of the lets say, "ugly women" Ive had, never ran away. The only one that was ever found was the one I didnt have time to bury.
