I think people just like to bad mouth places. New Yorkers are actually quite nice, I used to be one and gave many tourists directions and help back in the day. NYC was actually voted as the most polite city in a poll recently. I'm not sure that I 'd go that far, but people in New York are nice, we hold doors and say please and thanks. I wish people would actually visit places with open minds.
I would love to visit Glasgow someday - I have actually heard good things about it, especially in regard to music and the art scenes.

I have only been there once... 7/4/05. As amazing as it was and all... I did find the general public a bit cold. The reason... everyone walks around so fast, with headphones on and heads down. The people that I actually got to meet through my friends were very inviting. Therefore, I think it is just a perception of the general public while getting around the city. When you come from a town where people still greet you on the sidewalk with a warm smile and at least an acknowledement, it is a culture shock to walk the streets of NYC. Hope this helps.

Hello,
I suppose this is because New York is just another one of the worlds great melting pots full of humans from almost all the nations of the earth, being in the same place at the same time. and another reason is just look at how Italians are usually all in the same part of town, the same with the Irish people, and think of the colloquial place names too, 'Little Italy' 'China Town'. Then think of the Song Title. "You're A Native New Yorker", and the theory, that nobody trusts nobody, which to me is a double negative which means 'everybody trusts somebody'...
When I was there in 1989, I was taught to just stick with your own Tony, I am Irish, and I didn't meet anyone else who wasn't Irish. It worked for me, but I have to say I saw a lot of people That I would have talked with and even recognised with, who were not of Irish extraction. But it was simply explained to me thuswise. Tony! The people here are too busy doing what they gotta do, and you would just get in their way, so wait 'til they are through doin' it, then say Hello, and see if you get any reaction, I got some funny looks, and funny gesticulations, but at least they reacted to my greetings. Would I go to NewYork again? Sure I would, I loved the city and its people, I know what it's like to be busy doing my daily routine, and I wouldn't want me getting in their way either, even if I am a fun guy, so I saved all the fun 'til later, the best 6 weeks in my life were spent in New York...... Loved the place. but to finish with this query of yours, you will find cold and unfriendly people wherever you go in this world. I also love Glasgow, and used to deliver regularly to the Glasgow Herald Print works, and to the Airport too out on the Dumbarton Road, with very Many nights sleep in my Scania truck sleeper Cab. just being friendly Sir and passing by,... I hope this is a good asnswer for you, and did you smile? Bye for now. ...................Tony M

I've been there, and had the same impression before I went. I got it from TV mostly. In reality, New Yorkers were very nice people. Businesslike, yes, busy, often. But never rude. I really enjoyed it. Of course, I was in Manhattan, which is a nice area. And the pubs? Forget it! Great people. Instant conversation. I'd love to see Glasgow; I hear it's the same.
Personalities are lots worse sometimes here in "Good old Indiana", where Hoosier Hospitality "ain't what it used to be"!!

I even have in basic terms been there as quickly as... 7/4/05. As spectacular because it grow to be and all... I did locate the final public somewhat chilly. the explanation... each physique walks around so quickly, with headphones on and heads down. the those that i certainly have been given to fulfill via my friends have been very inviting. subsequently, i think of it relatively is purely a concept of the final public mutually as getting around the city. once you come from a city the place human beings nevertheless greet you on the sidewalk with a heat smile and a minimum of an acknowledement, it relatively is a custom ask your self to stroll the streets of NYC. desire this enables.

I don't think New Yorkers are rude at all, and I have never heard that either. One the average they are friendly and polite, sometimes in a hurry maybe but that's all I can say.

I live on the opposite coast and have to honestly say that it's the first time I hear about the reputation.
So a few bad apples ruined your day in the big apple.

It's a busy city. People might not intend to be rude. They just don't have the time to be comforting.
