I am a first time cat owner and she is now off the kitten food but when I feed her she is still hungry, she has been wormed and fixed, every since she has been fixed she doesn't get full. I feed her at set times so she won't get fat, but I don't want her to cry from hunger either. what food is better for her to feel full, and stay healthy?

Below are some links about cat nutrition that will help you make the best decision.

I recommend getting her started NOW on eating a good canned food. Wellness, for instance, is one of the better ones - it's completely grainless. There are other good ones listed in the What to feed link below.

Because a good quality canned food is very low in carbs, they're less likely to lead to obesity, which means you can feed a bit more than you can of dry. My girls both get one full can (5.5-6oz) per day. They still beg now and then, but they ARE getting plenty to eat!

Because it can be difficult to convert a kibble junky to canned food, it's best to start them off on it.

Even better yet, investigate feeding her a raw meat diet (either whole prey or ground/chunks with supplements). I'm currently looking into that, and as soon as I can convince my girls that it's actually food, that's what they'll be chowing down on.

What food to feed? There are so many but you can be safe with most of the brands that any pet store carries. If you're going to use a grocery store pet food, Purina is a fairly good bet. Otherwise IAMS, Science Diet, or some equivalent is great.

Getting full ..... hummm .... How do we know if the cat is full or not? Do they tell us or just walk away from the bowl?

If you leave food out for the cat all day it may or may not get fat later in life. If you feed once or twice a day, 1/4 to 1/2 cup of quality food, you'll have few problems.

Our cats don't walk away from the dish until they're done or full. When they do I take the leftovers up and put them away until the next meal. They have grown, have great coats, are healthy and lively.

Even if the cat cries, don't let her train you. You do the training.

Most cats are like that! My cat was never full! If I let him he would eat all day. I used to give him a little 9 Lives canned food in the morning i would leave some dry food out during the day and at night give him a little more dry food. Sometimes you feel sorry for them when they cry for food all the time. But its not healthy to feed them too much.. Too many people give their cats too much food and then they become overweight. It is the owner's fault. Sounds like your kitty is growing up and has a growing appetite just as well talk it over with your vet and see what suggestions he/she can give you on the proper way to feed your cat. :)

Hi, I went through this recently when I got my very first cat, in september.

I read up on top foods on about.com

If you search for cat foods you'll get a list of the top 10 foods for cat. Turns out most foods that you can buy in grocery stores are really bad. Something like. .. say , Frisk' chicken dinner, can have a max of 5% actual chicken, & it can be byproducts. Any food that meets the AAFCO standards is pretty good.

My cat was getting sick on brandnames I was buying at the grocery store, apparently cats eat till they are full, but for house cats it's a good idea to measure their food intakes, cuz they have a tendancy to be overweight.

I buy only nutro products for our cat, max. I noticed such a dramatic improvement in the way he acts, his energy, his coat, even the smell from his litterbox disappeared & we use only scentless litter.

Also I'm a student, a poor one I might add, and the nutro products really aren't very expensive when you buy in bulk.

Hope that helps! remember to check out the about.com page on cats, I subscribe to Franny's "all about cats", & get emails every week, she's great!! GOOD LUCK with your new kitty!

I leave dry food out for my cats at all times. I always have & I've never had one get over weight. My vet also suggested this, due to cats grazing most of the day. My cats have been fed Science Diet & like it very much, it's the best food I've found for them.

Wellness is definatly the best. Stay away from cat food that have corn or by-products in the ingrediants.
Natural Choice is also good I'm told but have never used it.

cats need protein in their diet. fruit and veggies? get real. iams makes a wonderful pet food if you don't mind paying the extra money. My mother made pet food for ten years and worked in the quality control department. iams wold turn down meat and the truck would go down the road to the next place that made frozen pot pies for humans! you should feel very comfortable feeding your cat iams. especially if you eat pot pies.

Eukanuba is a good brand, but it's expensive.

Are you sure she's crying for food? Maybe she just wants attention?
