I am very religous person and have watched him over the years beginning in 1987 when he sent out a letter to American bishops regarding them and was surprised by it's insensitive, harsh, and homophobic attitude. He actually blamed the violence and disrcrimination they have experienced on themselves. Secondly in 1993 a letter came out urging bishops to oppose their civil rights. Not to mention a more recent letter saying that the ones who are in relationships should and cannot recieve any sort of rights, nor respect from either the government or the public. So far he has failed to say anything of compassion or understanding towards them only an attitude of abuse, disregard and contempt.

......The seventh commandment covers in principle all forms of illicit sex, including male and female homosexuality--now an enormous sin in the Western world........The Pope cannot and will not condone nor sympathize with such an immoral and irresponsible behavior pattern that is considered anti-family. For this you cannot blame him.............But you can blame him for talking out of both sides of his mouth and coming across like a leader of mass confusion hell bent on deceiving the world and bringing us into a New World Order...................now can't you?

From the Catholic perspective, homosexual acts are like sticking forks in one's eyes. Such acts are damaging to the spiritual integrity of the human body and human soul as God made them. Thus it is more compassionate to refuse to endorse their destructive activities, especially when they seek to overthrow ordered and Christian understandings of sexual love.

If you'll look up a writer named Eve Tushnet, a bisexual Catholic convert, you'll find a smart woman who can explain this very well. Though homosexual acts are sins, they are not unforgivable sins. Every sin is a misdirected virtue, which is why sin is so difficult to recognize and repent from--it has that bit of good which keeps us locked in. Take a look at Eve Tushnet, she deserves serious consideration.

I think he thinks he loves homosexuals, while detesting what he thinks they do.

In Italy, he recently admonished Catholic lawmakers to vote against civil unions in that country, calling it their duty as Catholics to resepect marriage, or something like that.

He, and others like him fail to recognize that by legislating against civil rights of the GLBT community, they are in fact promoting hatred and intolerance. While they say they "love" us, everything they do promotes hatred and bigotry. What they seem to be trying to do is to make it as difficult for GLBT folk to experience fulfilling relationships in safety, hoping that that difficulty will lead to a transition away from what they see as immoral behavior.

These people don't recognize that sexual and gender identity is a part of who people are, and is not as malleable as they wish. They don't understand that as difficult as it might be for them to "become gay", it is equally difficult for a gay person to become straight. Perhaps the word "difficult" should be replaced with "impossible".

Perhaps the Catholic chruch is more homophobic than most because it seems a natural position for a homosexual boy to join the priesthood. Not wishing relationships with women, Catholic homosexual boys might feel a celibate lifestyle as a priest quite safe, as well as being an opportunity to serve God. Perhaps they feel that if they can live without sex, that the rest of the LGBT community ought to be able to as well.

Pope Benedict was of the exact same mindset as all the other major religions at that time.

He's still of the same mindset as all the other major religions.

You're going to have to do better than that to cast dispersions on this man.

You're not gonna get too much pro gay love from the Catholic church, unless it's behind closed doors in a priests office.
