For modesty. It's an Arab tradition. It isn't a religious one. Adherence to traditional dress varies across Arab societies. Saudi Arabia is more traditional, while Egypt is less traditional. Women are required to wear abayas in some Arab countries, such as Saudi Arabia. In some countries, like Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, the veil is not mandatory. However, in other places, all women, even non-Muslims, wear veils out of fear of mistreatment by fanatics.

It is not a sin not to cover your face, were it, I would be in so much trouble. Sometimes; I ask myself why do they any how? You ought to see the gobs of eye make-up they wear over her, they look like made-up clowns. Your ex friend told you that because that is what she was told. Some places in Saudi are more relaxing that others. I live in Dammam and often I go out with out even covering my hair. It all depends upon where you live I guess; some places are stricter. The key is to dress modestly that's all. Do what you believe is right for you and not what others have to say.

It makes sense. I mean you don't want to send someone you meet online a picture of yourself. Likewise you don't want to show yourself off to everybody around.
It's not just Islam either. Christian women used to do the same (nuns still do), and Jewish women did too. All the biblical women were covered up, even their head. Look at any picture of Mary.
The fact of the matter is that guys will look at a woman's body if she is not careful. By covering up, a woman is demanding respect for being an intelligent human being, not just a sexy body.

Yes it's part of the same religion not to mess around with someone else's wife....... but not all women are married, either. It's done for modesty, women are not to flaunt their attractiveness to tempt men. Men and women are instructed to lower their gaze and not have social interaction with members of the opposite sex that aren't immediate family.
Actually, the Qur'an does not specify that women cover their heads, that comes from hadith, or tradition.

Even Muslims don't seem to want to say whether it's cultural, religious, or whatever. Typical. However, I did see the funniest family photo the other day. Five Muslim women (?) all dressed in the totally black burka (I think they call it), everything covered except a slit for the eyes. A man, apparent family member, was posing them for a family portrait. One lady did have the distinguishing feature of a golden purse on her arm.
Bash me, report me, who cares, it was funny. Can you imagine the family album of that man! LOL (Michael Jackson could sneak in).

In case of Muslims their progressiveness stopped evolving when Mohammad revealed the message of God. Their philosophy, culture, progressiveness, jurisprudence stopped evolving. Freezed! They can't go back in time neither can they come forward in time. Even suppose today's Muslims become liberated and forward thinking people, tomorrow a Mullah will come and after seizing the power take them all back in time. Like what happened in Iran. These are my views and I have nothing against mulsims as long as they don't mess up with me or my religion.

Islam requires that a woman dress modestly. Complete covering is personal choice.

It is for modesty, but that is just a facade for oppressing women. I their culture women are lower than men. This goes back so far, back when MAN took over religion, and burned all women who were thought to be witches. It has just evolved into what it is today....Suppression of the Feminine
