Just wondering what people thought about the episode of "Our Unique Family" that aired tonight on TLC, featuring a Wiccan minister and her family. Wiccans, did you feel it was a reasonable and balanced portrayal? Non-Wiccans, how did it strike you?
Personally, I was pleasantly surprised by the whole thing. I thought Rev. Kendra Vaughan Hovey was a friendly and eloquent spokesperson for that particular type of Wicca and that the producers of the show didn't set out to make the Wiccans look like freaks for the sake of an hour's entertainment.

Hbomb, she called herself a witch and talked about spells. :-) It was wonderful to see, even the parts with the Christians who said (all without ever asking her or her family any questions) "It's evil, they're worshipping dark forces and they're going to hell!" Hearing the Christians speak in their ignorance only pointed up how healthy and happy the Wiccan family (and their religion) is.

I watched it and LOVED IT.
It really gave Kendra the chance to show how NORMAL and down to earth most Wiccans are.
The way it was filmed, it really did allow the closed minded people of the town to show their ignorance and how small they are as people.

This is such an easy one. Humans have an inborn need to compete. Without such a need, we would have been crushed long ago by natural selection. In order to compete, we have to have someone to compete against. In order to compete, we have to identify differences and similarities between us and those around us. The surprising thing is that the similarities are actually used by us as scales of comparison, so we tend to think of them in terms of the difference in how we and they perform on that scale. There are similarities that we can't use for competitive purposes. Almost all of us have two eyes, for example. We tend to either ignore these as uninteresting, or completely disregard those who don't meet the minimum standard as being instantly substandard, and therefore also not worth competing with in that manner.

This almost make me wish I had the big money cable or dish. I've watched Wiccans be denigrated and denied religious equality by the Christians for about sixty years, now.

Sounds interesting, I'm glad anytime they have a show on TV about Pagans or Wiccans that isn't Charmed or Buffy related. Thanks for the info though, I'll check it out the next time around.

Wish I could've seen it. What kind of Wicca was it? Did she call herself a witch and talk about spells, or was it more of an eco-feminist thing?

As a non-Wiccan, I can only hope that this practice is brought to light as a NON-EVIL thing. I cannot stand ignorance by bible preaching people.

I didn't see it, but will watch for reruns and DVR it. It's got to be better than what Tyra had on not too long ago. =)
PS - it's re-running tonight at midnight (Central time), at least according to my listings.

I missed it. The commercial for it that I had seen did kinda tilt towards sensationalism. But, that's marketing I guess.
