how do you people deal with people calling you with military slang? for example: army-grunt; marine - jar head or devil dog; af - flyboy; navy - squid.

where i work there's an army reservist that i work beside and me and him constantly call each other out. (i'm depping for the navy) but when someone (i.e. civilian) calls me a sqid, i cringe a little. i was wondering if it was just me?

my marine boyfriend and his buddies are the same way, but their marines... i've learned to live with their headstrong ways.

Well, you kind of mixed general terms with some that are derogatory in Nature, as a retired Navy man I always took squid as a derogatory term. Swabby or Swabjockey was not so bad, Same for Jarhead, kind of deragotory. A lot goes into who you are talking to and the context of the situation. some of my friends call me squid and I just fire back at them, but someone who does not know me, then I'm going to let them now where I stand.

I'm a brand new US Army Reservist (DEP - I ship for BCT in about 6 months), and I'm fine with being called a Grunt.

It's worse - I'm in the Aviation branch (or will be! 15U!)....

But I'm good with it. Usually it's people who are trying to be friendly or show support. I've never had anyone call me a 'grunt' trying to be mean.

What you do in public will be repeated. You should take yourself out of the situation all together. Additionally, you're not a member of the military until you sign into MEPS and sign your contract to ship...so dont take it so serious cause that is lame...

i just ignore the slang all the time. it's just something that makes you stand out from the other person. you have to understand that it's a reputation thing for your branch of service

I'm kind of with vapeaceout. It's one thing for family to make fun of each other, something else entirely for others to do it.

It never bothered me. In fact I was proud to be titled by those names.

it does not bother me at all. i am proud to be called a "fly boy". all it is is a broad generalization based on what your chosen branch is knowen for.
