Try to drop hints about how you enjoy being single, or how you aren't ready to date, or something along those lines. He might back off a bit in fear of rejection, but in doing it this way, you won't actually have to tell him "no" directly.
If he doesn't get the hint and mentions to you how he likes you, thank him and be very gentle, but mention how you don't know if dating is the right course to take just yet. Explain to him that you need more time. Don't lead him on, but don't crush his feelings, either.
And stay friends with him, because your feelings just might change in the future. You never know...maybe you don't like him now, but everything could change in the future.

As a guy this was always the painful part for me, rejection. The best way to tell him is be blunt and to the point. Don't try to be nice about it, because then he will think you have some interest in him. Be firm and to the point he is not your type. Don't tell him "I like you as a friend", "I am not ready for a relationship now", "I am not emotionally ready", because he might interpet that as you have some interest in him.

As a guy I always hated this part, poor guy :-( Men have it rough!

i'm sorry but that's part of the things you're gonna have to do in life. Turning someone down is just one of those inevitable things. You're a nice girl and i know you don't want to break the person's feelings and feel guilty but it's better he knows the truth, right?

Give him a chance to atleast be your friend unless he's already your friend then just tell him we need to keep it at friend level.

If you don't like the guy, don't accept just because you don't like turning people down...it'd be unfair, because you'd be leading the poor guy on...

Tell him in a calm, rational way that you only like him as a friend and that you don't LIKE him the way he likes you.
