During protein-energy malnutrition, the plasma protein status will be indicative of this fact. For long-term status, albumin can be used to check how much protein a person has been eating. For short term status, pre-albumin can be used (it has a shorter half-life than albumin, so it is more sensitive to short changes). They are both plasma proteins. So if plasma proteins are low, this is due to a poor protein intake.
