Motel is splicing of "motor hotel" into one word. That kind of explains it. It means car friendly. It is a word made popular in the US when highways started to pop up and people started to travel by car.
A motor hotel is one that caters to motorists. So generally speaking, free, good parking, easy access from car to room - usually individual room entrances. Not a lot of money wasted on a big lobby, like a hotel does.
Usually smaller, and not much more than 2 or 3 floors. Traveling by car is more of a middle class thing, so motels tend to be cheaper. I have paid less for a decent motel than I have to park at a hotel.
Generally, they are located on the highway in small towns, or the outskirts of major cities, while hotels are located right downtown.

I don't think there is a major difference. I work with a hotel chain, Best Western. But I work at a Best Western Hotel, though I know Best Western Motels exist. But to stay a Best Western, the place has to meet certain standards otherwise they take the flag away...so I think they're pretty much the same.

I believe that a motel has individual entrances to each room, from the outside of the building. A hotel has hallways, where you enter your door from the inside of the building.

If you want a grand vacation you can choose a hotel, it is bigger and has more amenities. But if you are budget constrained, you can choose a motel, it is a bit smaller than a hotel with fewer amenities.

Not much any more. Originally, a motel was a place you could drive up to the room itself.

you mostly park your automobile next on your room at a hotel. inns many times have a diner the place you are able to devour; they do no longer supply room provider. You get entry to your room from the exterior. they are often greater cheap than a hotel. once you reside at a hotel you many times park in a automobile park or they have a storage to park in. You get entry to your room from interior the construction. Rooms many times value greater desirable than inns and a few are darn extreme in value. they provide room provider and usually have a minimum of one eating place, no longer diner, the place you are able to devour. some inns have quite a few eating places. in the finer inns you will get your footwear shined in one day in case you place them exterior your door or regardless of association they have. some inns even have shops interior of them and you will additionally make holiday arrangements. The greater you pay for a room the greater centers they have. there are in all probability some greater variations yet off the precise of my head i can not think of of any.
