sometimes that means that your dog may be nervous. pet him/her more and let it know that its ok. btw-i work at a vet clinic. it could also just be a habit like humans have such as biting fingernails.

When a dog is upset, conflicted or uncertain about something, his teeth may chatter. However, it can also mean that the dog is in pain or has dental problems. If the chattering continues or gets worse, you should make an appointment with your vet.

My dog did that when she was excited or nervous, but also when she was scratching something that was extremely itchy, like the back of her ears. I found out she had ear mites. Could that be your dogs problem? Best go to the vet and find out.

Is your pup looking at an animal outside? I have cats that chatter when they see a bird outside...excitement I guess!

When we first got our rescued German Shepherd, She use to do this. It was a nervous, anxiety thing. When she would get overly excited she would do what I called the dolphin click and she would click her teeth like that. I had to break it so she would not nip anyone. So now she gets a toy or something to keep in her mouth when she is getting excited so she does not click, pinch, or nip me.

or scared that he's in trouble.

The chattering is part of their hunting technique to get the attention of birds it sees.
