Your friends weight is not necessarily "fat". Allot depends on his height and body build. If he really wants to know he should check with his doctor. It's probably equally important that he stay in shape by exercising. A person can be 'big' and healthy or underweight and unhealthy. There is also something called a "growth chart" that he can look up on the internet. He can plot in his age and height and see where he fits on the chart. That will at least give him an idea. Again, his doctor will give the best and most acurate answer if he really wants to know.

why do you feel compelled to say anything at all? Does he live in a house/world without mirrors?
Leave him alone and don't say anything. When he is ready he will deal with his weight on his own.

You don't give much info do you. How tall is he? Is he into sports? Does he have a large frame?
He could be skinny, he could be average, he could be overweight. You don't give enough info to have any idea whatsoever.

Age has nothing to do with it. It's a relationship between height and weight. Since you haven't mentioned his height, no one here can answer your question.
However, he can and should discuss this with the school nurse.
