As for having the know-how on passing the Foreign Service Written Exam (FSWE), I'd recommend, at the very least, a degree in one of the fields mentioned; Management, Consular, Economic, Political and Public Diplomacy. It's safe to assume you should be studying these fields on the international level (eg: concentrating in international relations as opposed to American politics in a political science degree).

It´s not easy. I took the Foreign Service Exam about 5 or 6 years ago and didn´t pass. They don´t tell you what your grade was or how close you were to passing so you have no choice but to take the exam again without knowing what your weak areas are. My degree in international relations didn´t help me either.
