I just read, actually today in my psych book that when you skip sleep, or get off your circadian rhythm, you are depriving yourself of your 90 min intervals of REM cycle, and if you keep depriving yourself, your body craves it all the more and you feel like complete $%*# after a while. It will affect your health, if you want to read more about it, look up a copy of Psychology and Me, second edition, end of chapter 6, interesting stuff, your body needs both light REM sleep and deep periods, don't mess with your mind, people that were deprived of REM started hallucinating while awake.

No. People who claim never to sleep, just to meditate, aren't telling the truth. Meditation is not sleep. Meditation is great for you, but it isn't a substitute for sleep.
