All Catholic sacraments require catechesis (teaching) before being received except the Anointing of the Sick.

This is to make sure the participants know the what, how, and why of their commitment and all of the rights and responsibilities that go along with it.

Exceptions are made when there is danger of death.

The Catholic church doesn't require Pre Cana meetings/session but they DO require that you, your future spouse and a priest who is going to marry you are all on the same page. These premarital classes/sessions are to make sure you understand your faith, your Faith in marriage, what is expected of you; i.e., birth control, the holiness of the Sacrament of Marriage, raising kiddies Catholic.

The only alternative available to you is to do it privately with your priest. So just call him up and set up an appointment and begin your sessions. They may turn out to be shorter due to less involvement from others; as it's one on one.

Blessings and Congratulations.

It probably depends upon the pastor, but I and several friends I know, simply had a personal meeting with the pastor. Now, he knew both of us pretty good. I'm sure that pre-cana meetings vary, but you really should find something useful out of them if there is no other option.

Holy Mackeral, we went. It was the most tedious experience of our lives. Basically, we were supposed to share our feelings in front of a bunch of people we didn't know.

Then the priest showed up and talked about marriage, as if he had any knowledge at all about the subject.

I actually think pre-marriage class is a good idea. But the Catholic church's class was waaaaayyyyyy too long.

No but it is pushed. I know in our Parish you must give 6 months notice before you want to wed. Now days I think it's so the priest can make them separate in their living arrangements so they kind of halfway respect the marriage meaning.

There are many options.

They can get hitched at the courthouse. They can get married in China. They can even take up and tell everyone they are married.

I urge everyone to visit this site.
