As a 25 year over the road truck driver, this much I know. It is recommended that you stop far enough back that you can still see the rear tires under the vehicle. This is to help protect you if you are rear-ended so you won't be pushed into the vehicle in front of you. Otherwise I don't believe there is a law in place concerning the amount of space required.
Why people get right on your bumper, or sit 25 feet away shows they really don't know too much about driving as far as I am concerned

ugggh!!!! I hate when this happens. I am so afraid that when they stop so hard their brakes are not going to let them stop soon enough, and most of the time I am behind someone else.
Here is what I do, I stop about a cars length behind a car just in case this person gets too close to my butt. I then move up just to get away from them. Most of the time, they don't even move up.
The only thing I do is look at them in the rear view mirror and shake my head in disgust.

Believe it or not, some of these people think if they stop further back, the sensors will think there is only one car at the intersection, and the light cycle will be too short. Bunch of dummies don't realize if they are hit from behind they will definitely be pushed into the car in front, and will share fault in the accident even though not moving at the time.

Because cops don't do anything ab out it . At driving school they teach you that if you cannot see the license plate on the car in front of you , you are too close . Its like where i live people don't respect the do not turn right on red or do not block the intersection and people continue to do this because there can be one of our local police officers at that intersection and he sees it but does nothing so no one cares.

They do that to make room for everyone else. Otherwise, the traffic would be backed up clear down the street.
