How do you get your puppy to get use to the leash? I heard keeping it on him around the house would work but, because I pulled him "once"only to get him to the front.I had no choice he may think it's bad now,can I still fix it?

let him wear a "harness" for a week or two until he gets used to it. put him on the leash for a few minutes every day. after a while he will get the idea. practice, practice, practice. don't expect too much too soon. he is just a baby. treat him like one.

if your puppy is young, say 8-12 weeks, its should be used to wearing a collar now. If the first time you used the leash you pulled him, yes he will be aprehensive.
The trick is, have his collar on and play a game on the ground like tug-o-war or something. Have the lead in your lap and when he is absorbed in the game, quickly put it on and let it go and keep playing.
He will notice it but will like the game too much. Get him used to having it attached to his collar, always watch him but let him drag it around the house. After 2 days or so of this on and off,let your puppy lead you around where he wants to go while you hold on to the lead.
Slowly start giving directions gently with little pulls and praise him immensley when he comes the way you want. He willl get the general idea soon enough, as long as there is positive experiences associated with it. :)

Get some food to bait or treat him with and keep calling him in a gentle voice while you are trying to get him to walk with you. Reward him when he does start moving in the right direction, it might take a while but depending on the age they catch on fast. If he isn't walking correctly with you by 4-5 months at that time you can start taking a little more control, but don't expect young puppies to be leash trained at 8-12 weeks.

when you take your dog for a walk on the leash you must train him by, first, keeping him at your side with the leash until he recognizes and adjusts to this situation. after the training is complete you may let your dog, eventually have freedom of the entire length of the leash.

it is so important to get your dog to trust and understand you. therefore you must be very aware of what intones are in your voice at all times. there are times when you'll be angry about something and not be aware that you are scaring your dog. your dog will react positively to your voice and actions if he/she remembers them as positive.

good luck.

Yes, dogs have short memories and pupies even shorter. Let your pup carry the leach around the house for short peroids. Then walk your pup around the yard in familiar settings. after the dog is comfortable with this then you can take him for a walk. You have to go outside and train him to move when you say move, and not ahead of you, and to stop/stay when you say so. You use light to moderate jerks when the response is not what you want, and you can use praise/petting or treats (I favor praise/petting so they are not dependent on treats) when they do what you want. My pup learned fast. They want to please you. They learn that going well on a leash is the way to get to go cool places.

As long as you are not causing INJURY it is fine. The jerking is ok - and they learn from a choke collar to stop straining and towing you along on a walk. You have to be assertive.

Yeah get hime comfortable with the leash - you want him to associate the leash with something good happening.

get a training collar that pinches his neck when he tugs or when you have to pull him. Also, don't use retractable leashes until they're leash trained.
