Some people believe that education is the "ticket" out of poverty; others believe that education perpetuates social inequity. What do you think?

Those who work hard in school and get an education can have more than just a job. They can have a career and a profession. That brings them out of poverty and it doesn't require them to give what they earn through hard work to those who refuse to work or get an education. It doesn't matter what color, race, or nationality you are-hard work and an education will pay off.

Maybe this is unfair but I think both are true.

I think that because we live in such a capitalistic society right now that we really do need education to have careers that will support us , our families, and our communities. Even if we fight for change it'll take awhile, and it'll take some money so right now it is a ticket out of poverty.

Also higher education perpetuates social inequity because in all honesty there are certain populations that are less likely to get this education because of the way it is set up. This definitely isn't fair and it isn't right. Some people can push it and get in even if they come from poverty but for the most part it is just too difficult and thus creates social inequity.

What we need to do is make education more easily accessible.
We need to have education that suites all different cultures.

What can we do right now? Go to high schools and middle schools and educate youth on how they can get into higher education. Honestly in several areas most of them haven't heard it before. And we can push for alternative educations, ones that incorporate cultural education.

Well, that is my two cents.

Education is one tool but people who live in poverty must also be motivated to get out of it. An educated lazy bum is still a lazy bum.

being educated helps.but it will not necessarily assure one of material riches.
some of the least academically educated people have become extremely wealthy through their own" street smarts".
conversely, some professors die in poverty.
as mae west said "ive been rich and ive been poor, and rich is better". as with education, its better than ignorant bliss.
conversely some so called educated people are very ignorant!
