I'm really serious. The universe that we know exists in the here and now is so vast and we so infintessimally small that to just truly stop and think about it a mind expanding and incedibly humbling experience. It is vastly old, and the first stars burned for billions of years before life was even possible. We ourselves are made of the elements produced in those first cosmic furnaces. Here on Earth, the evidence clearly shows that life struggled to survive and evolve despite almost being wiped from the planet on several occasions. Today, we can see into the very genetic code of life that we are related to every other living thing here. It is profound in a way that religion never could be. I feel sorry for those people who live their lives believing in fairy tale dieties and demi-gods instead seeing the complex beauty that surrounds us.

And what could make one prouder than knowing that they are descended from apes that were descended from reptiles that were descended from fish etc. and that each pair of those organisms had what it took to survive long enough to pass on that gift of life and that this passing of the baton has been going on for hundreds of millions of years.

Each of us is a colony of cells, more complex than is any city that we have yet built, more complex than any machine we have yet produced.

As you say, way cooler than any religion could ever hope to be.

I get a mind-numbing experience when I think about what was before me, how I came to be and what this world was before anything existed. Even though the feeling lasts for a few seconds, it still shakes me to the core. And then my attention is diverted to what I know now...and all is right again.

I don't understand why some people can just destroy the earth with no care in the world. Many people aren't paying attention to the detail and I am guilty of that at times. I question a lot of things in life and I can't seem to get settled on one idea.

People take so many things for granted. They fail to appreciate what holds this world together. They perform the same tasks every day and believe what they want to believe. I can't recall any religion that addresses the complexities of Earth. Everyone lives like there is a tomorrow, but I don't think that's living at all.

It's sad that many people miss that but I don't see how it has anything to do with god, imaginary or not. Many believers in god see the beauty, mystery, and complexity of the universe just like you do. I'm sure there are atheists and people that have a strong dislike for religion that miss the natural wonder of the universe. As far as I can tell it can go both ways so I'm not really sure what you're getting at.

I too am amazed by how the universe works, how it has evolved, and how a lot of people just don't even notice or aren't even curious about knowing anything about the history of the planet in terms of how it all came to be. Many people just take it for granted, don't care, don't think past their television sets or big SUV's and are ruining it more and more each day. I hear ya. It is amazing. Nature is just amazing!!!

It is very sad indeed. I was just standing outside yesterday...it was a beautiful day here in Texas...and I was just amazed by the wonder of the universe. All that is in it and all that it holds. And to think that I'm part of that and experiencing life. I feel very lucky.

When you truly understand the incredible beauty of physics and how it is derived from mathematics, reality seems far more beautiful and profound than simply making up a hateful sky fairy who created everything just to provide himself with a few beings to torture.

Very deep..

I agree. It is amazing. It is brilliant. It is sad as well, for those religious people, since life itself is something we shouldn't waste.

May the universe bless you.

Very true, it is quite amazing. We should all work to make it a better experience for everyone instead of playing the 'my god is better than your god' game.
