I am having surgery Wednesday and the nurse told me not to wear makeup because they like to watch the coloring in the patients face and plus it will mess up when they put tape on my eyes. I am not having surgery that has anything to do with my face.. so I don't understand? Anyone know?

Taping your eyes shut has two functions:
One, as other have said, it prevents your eyes from drying out.
Two and more importantly, it help protect you from recieving a corneal abrasion. While you operation is not on your face, a variety of things will have to be done around your face during the operation (mainly airway control). Too minimize the chance of accidentally injurying your eyes, you eyes a taped shut.

Blinking you eyelids naturally lubricates your eyes and acts as a sheild to prevent injury. During surgery you are unable to blink and most eyes open partially during surgery and you are unable to shut them. Most anesthesia providers use some sort of artifical tears and then tape them shut.

I've had two surgeries and I didn't know they ever put any tape on my eyelids. I too am curious to know why also. Don't hesitate to ask your doctor any questions. That what they are there for.
