I have a self defeating habit of so often trying to find a way to take the easy way out. . can anyone help me to develop some strategies for how I can change this???

I suggest you take some time by yourself in a quiet place and write down why you think you do this. What do you gain? When did this coping method begin? Did you learn this from a parent?
You may be afraid to fail or you are just plain lazy. Either way, it is something you need to change. It is great you are aware of it, being aware is 50% of the battle. Counseling might help too.
