My husbands health insurance changed its deductible from 1,000 to 2,200. His employer said they couldn't afford the increase in rates and the insurance technically ran out 2/1 but the insurance company extended it for them. The union doesn't want coverage changed at all. We got a surprise today when we went to the pharmacy and picked up our prescriptions which should have been only about $50 and it was $250. After calling the insurance company they said our insurance was changed. Can your employer do that without even telling you. Shouldn't they have to give you some kind of notice!

First and sadly, yes they can change your insurance. Second they should have told you but if it isn't stated specifically in the union contract, again they don'y have to tell you. The only way you get to know is like you did or when the new handbooks get mailed to you. Sorry, hope this helps>

Yes, they can. The new deductible & prescription coverage should show on your card. That is how we found out that our coverage changed - and not for the better - I wish it was only the deductible.

Yes they can. It's bad practice but they can change without telling you. Since you/your husband is represented by a union I strongly suggest contacting your union representative and filing a complaint.

Yes they can.

Its not nice.

If there's a union contract in place, they're probably skating on thin ice... Check with his rep, and call the insurance carrier. See what materials they have available.

Usually not. But they don't have to ask for your permission either!

They can, but it's a courtesy to tell you.
