hello. im a slim 15 year old boy. I'm looking to gain about 15-20 lbs of muscle. Can i do this with dumbbells and a weight machine, or do i need a barbell? I would appreciate the help. Thanks!

Typically barbell exercises is what you want to focus on. Center your workouts around the core lifts: bench press, squats, deadlifts. Only do supplemental exercises after. The core lifts and other compound exercises are the best mass builders by far. Find an adult with experience to show you how to lift correctly and safely.

Don't do too many sets or reps in a routine. Doing this will actually work against you. This can also lead to overtraining which is really bad. Just work on good form, do two to three exercises at the most for each muscle group, work to failure in each set and don't go beyond maybe 12 reps per set.

Good nutrition is key in building. Every athlete, bodybuilder and powerlifter will agree that you need to get an excess of good proteins, carbs and good fats when participating in a high intensity workout routine. Get lots of these over 5-6 meals per day for optimal growth. And stay away for steroids and other pitfalls!

Don't listen to folks who might try to discourage you by saying you're too young. There is a lot of misinformation out there about people starting a lifting routine early in life, the biggest being that lifting at your age will stunt your growth - TOTAL myth. I suggest perusing some of these articles and deciding for yourself.

if your wanting to tone use alot of reps with light weight but if your wamting to build mass then use max wieght and few reps so it really depends on how much weight your using and not so much as what your using i personaly like free weights over machines but if you dont have someone lworking out with you then use the machine it is safer
