I have lived in 23 houses in 20 years. I have never stayed in one house for more than one year, until I got married to my husband and have stayed in the same lovely home for 2 years! I don't remember my birth house.

My siblings and I were the children of a Paraplegic WWII Veteran, and when he and my mother married, they built a 3 bedroom house .. quite expansive for that day and age.

I remember my bedroom ... small, on the outer edge of the house, and growing up in the Chicago area .. where the winters are very cold, lots of snow, and yes, bitterly windy ... my room was ALWAYS the coldest in the home .. and I mean it. (but of course, I was the only girl ... so that is the room I got).

Just shortly after my siblings and I all entered Active Duty Service in the US Military, our parents died .. and at that point, with the greater part of our military careers ahead of us ... we all agreed and the house was sold after a few years .. because not one of us was ever going to be stationed back in that area, and we realized that with all the commercial construction, the buying and selling of property, and the conditions, we would not go back anyway.

So yes, we remember the corner lot, mowing with the push lawnmower (yep -- no motor ... and 3/4 of an acre of land to mow), trimming the bushes by hand, the wooden fence, and the breezeway (which had those slat windows that you cranked open).

No, I don't really miss it at all. Maybe it is because my dad still lives there and it's only 1/4 mile down the road. Anyway, growing up my windows faced the back yard and it was a wooded area. I slept with my windows up in the summer. No night light either! I used to go to sleep scared because I'd hear things. And a couple of times heard a bobcat. Let me tell you, those things are VERY scary to hear! Sounds sort of like a wailing baby.

I miss the house I can remember b/c it was big and it was in a nice neighborhood and it was unique. The people who live there now haven't even painted it since we move out 22 years ago. What a waste of a beautiful home.
