How do people get an expected family contribution of zero? Assuming someone in their family works full time for at least minimum wage, shouldn't their efc be at least a dollar?

I understand some disabled individuals cannot work, but what about everyone else who gets pell grants? A friend's (who is considered independant) adjusted gross income was less than $5000 but her EFC was more than $2000!

I have an efc of 0 because I'm independent of my parents and went to school full-time last year and the pt job I have is an assistantship offered by the school. Additionally I have grants and not any real income.

All the EFC tell the college is how much Pell grant money you are going to get and whether or not you are eligible for a subsidized or unsubsidized loan. A potential students income in the financial aid formula is weighted higher than her parents and that is why her EFC is so high. I how she saved alot of that $5000 is all I have to say.

Good Luck!!!

It doesn't matter what your EFC is. The school just uses that as a guideline when putting together your financial aid package. Even if your EFC was 0 they could still only offer you enough to cover a portion of the costs. If just depends upon the cost of the school and how much need based aid they have available.

If you are poor you get an EFC of 0. For example when I was in college my mother was getting food stamps and SSI (for disability), we were only making about 9,000 year seriousally. She didn't work, she can't work.

We should not make people pay an EFC, education should be free for everyone. It sucks that it is hard for some, and I am with you on that all the way. But why make it harder for all people?
