- Gargle with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of water). The salt reduces swelling and discomfort.
- If you have postnasal drip, gargle frequently to prevent more throat irritation.
- Drink more fluids to soothe a sore throat. Honey and lemon or weak tea may help.
- Stop smoking and avoid others' smoke.
- Acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen will relieve pain and reduce fever. Do not give aspirin to children and teens under age 20.

gargle with mouthwash to help kill the germs, gargle with salt water to help heal the sore throat. There are throat sprays on the market that will numb your throat so it will not hurt, but then you cannot feel much of anything else either. Cough drops or peppermint drops to suck on, hot lemon tea is good for a sore throat. A sore throat may be a sign of something more serious also. A trip to the doctor is a good idea, he/she can take a culture to see if there is an infection that antibiotics will clear up or something more serious or contagious. In the case of the latter, you will want to stay away from others till the sore throat is cleared up.

Gargling with hot water and salt helps me, but once I had a horrendous sore throat skiing, I drank some Southern Comfort. It started working my throat right away, and my sore throat was gone!

It depends on what is causing it. If it is just an irritation (post nasal drip), having some hot tea would help sooth it. Also, Chloraseptic sprays help by numbing your throat but only for a short time.
If it caused by an infection (viral or bacterial), you may need to see a doctor for a course of antibiotics.

Heat some water up (not boiling); add some apple cider vinegar; gargle and swallow a tiny bit...keep doing this....it tastes nasty, but it takes the pinch out and makes your throat uninhabitable for bacteria
