First look for visible cracks around each of the holes on the valve side of the head. Also look inside the compression chamber, especially between the valves. Get a strong straight edge, no more than 1/8 " thick and lay it along the head across all the chambers. Using a feeler guage, make sure the gap, if there is any, between the straight edge and the head is within spec for that engine. Check it in at least five different areas. straight across and corner to corner. Make sure the head surface is clean first. Next is to check the valves. Rest the head on its side so the intake or exhaust ports are facing up. Fill the port with water. If the water does not leak past the valve, the valve is ok. If it does leak, the services of a good machine shop is required to reface the valves. Flip the head over and test the ports on the other side.

you will not be smog illegal by doing this. How ever, if you haven't done anything else to get more air in and more exhaust out you will see very little change in performance. As far as cost goes, can't reaaly tell you. There are tuner shops all over the place. Find one in the phone book and give them a call. But be sure the people are ASE certified in performance engine building and the like.

Well you took it off for a reason, did you not? I won't rip them off unless I got a reason and have the tools to do the work plus the information already in my possession.
Otherwise, all you can do is take the head to a machine shop and let them check it out for warpage, microcracks, and valve condition.

You need to take the head to a qualified Machine Shop and have them check it for cracks, warping etc.
