How hard is it to track down someone that stole a debit card? Can they just sweep your account? How do they get away with this? How long does it take to have the money put back in ones account? This was a brand new account. No one knows the pin number. It is in my head and I never wrote it down. If they are caught will they serve time? This was over 5,000.00 dollars.

Gee over $5,000 I do not know how that is even possible in the US. Banks have fraud software that suppose to freeze account or call the card hold to verify the transactions.

Pin number is not needed if it has a Visa or MasterCard symbol on your card. I hope you called and notified your bank that your card was compromised

In the U.S. your are protected by
EFTA agreement and if it has Mastercard or Visa symbol your also protected by thier zero libality policy

Efta Agreement up to 2 days $50.00 up to 60 days $500.00 over 60 days any amount in your account. This is one exeception
for unauthorized transfers involving only your debit card number (not the loss of the card), you are liable only for transfers that occur after 60 days following the mailing of your bank statement containing the unauthorized use and before you report the loss.

Unfortunately if your card had the visa logo, they dont need your pin they can run the card thru as a credit card and sign for it.
Some retail associates want to see id, some dont.
another great place to run debit cards is at the gas station, very rarely is there a camera with decent resolution and you can swipe the card at the pump....so cut the bank a break.
with that said
Contact the police and tell them what happened
THEN take your police report to the bank.
the bank can and will put the money back into your account while they investigate.
They can also give you a list of places where the card was used and if you do so quickly you might be able to get the businesses to hold onto the videotape so that they can see who is using the card. I doubt that they will show YOU but they might give the info to the police department for them to investigate.
Either way, time is of the essence.

no not illegal but you should have voided the whole transaction and left if you felt something was'nt right! and if she was rude you should have got her name and called the company or e-mailed the company which you can still do. if she didnt have the card machine she could have just made an imprint of the card number. i have done this before as a former retail manager. you cant still go back and talk to the manager and ask for her to investigate the record of your transaction last night. some companys send that info in to the home office buteither way should be on file. this is why debit cards are very sensitive. if a person cant deal with you straight up and in a professional manner than you shouldnt need that merchandise that bad next time get your card back and leave. asa far as HOLDING YOUR CARD HOSTAGE. thats when you should have raised your voice and asked for a manager or your card back immediately. people know who they can get away with things with! being assertive is a must in certain situations! COMPLAIN to the company. they will deal with her and accomadate you with coupons or something! the manager will know who worked last night since they make the schedule! just describe her!

As far as I know, even if you lose your debit card, no one knows your pin number and therefore cannot take any money out of your account.
You must go to your bank and report your lost card, they then will cancel the card and issue you a new card and you can invent a new pin number.
You must have photo ID to prove your name and other sensitive information regarding your account.

Call your bank and explain. Most banks place a daily limit of several hundred dollars on each account. Your bank will in most cases refund your losses. But you need to contact them ASAP. That's as soon as possible.
