This is something I used to wonder as well until I really dug in and started studying the Bible. First, God's word is very clear that we should not conjure spells (magic), or deal with witchcraft, or mediums.
“When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire [an ancient occult practice], or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination [detestable] to the LORD…”
-Deuteronomy 18:9-12a
There are other references to not talking to the dead. We had what back then we thougth were ghosts in our house growing up. Now I wonder what exactly they were. We never actually talked to them, but they were very scary and did things like blowing hot air on the back of your neck. I'm shivering just thinking about it.
Also, if you look back in the old testament at the story of Moses and Pharoah. Moses was sent by God to Pharoah but God said the man's heart was hardened and he would not believe even the miracles that Moses performed in God's name. In fact, the Pharoah had magicians who could repeat many of those miracles (at least on the surface). Moses threw his staff down and it turned into a snake. The wizards did the same but then Moses' snake ate theirs (showing that God is more powerful than magic and they could immitate his work but it was not the real thing). This happened several times in different situations. Don't you imagine those magicians were completely stunned when God parted the Red Sea and the Israelites marched across the sandy bottom? That was a miracle that no wizard could ever hope to perform but was nothing for our mighty and powerful God.
Also, I had a very wise grandma-in-law. I started dating my hubby in high school and I would spend a lot of time with this strong Christian woman. She would talk to me about a wide variety of things (including things that are now coming to pass and Bible prophecies being fulfilled). I thought she was nuts when I was 17, but now I realize how far ahead of her time she was. Anyway, she once told me that you don't mess with occult things (spells, Ouija boards, crystals, horoscopes, etc. etc.) because you open a door for Satan to walk into your life. It might start with something small but it could expand into something bigger. We've all heard the scary Ouija board stories and I've experienced a scary situation with one as a teen myself (I burnt the board it scared me so much). God sometimes sets down these rules simply to protect us from the dark forces of this world. Hope that helps a little :)

The Bible says that witchcraft, sorcery, magic, etc is not to be messed with because it's a way of trying to do things and get results without involving or relying on God. That's what sin does...it separates us from God...it's unholy and God is holy. The big deal here is that when you get involved with this stuff, you can be opening yourself up to some pretty dangerous things....namely, demonic influences here. This stuff can destroy you.....you get hooked before you even know what happened. God wants the best for you and He loves you...so, it's only normal that Someone who loves you and wants to protect you would warn you to have nothing to do with something that would hurt you.

Magic is forbidden in God's Word because He wants people to trust in Him, not in some superstitious belief that the planets, cosmos, or natural forces will somehow remedy life's problems. By trusting in these things, we are trusting God's creation (for God created all things) rather than in God Himself. This is a form of idolatry.

Because it's hogwash and downright silly. Magic (not a "magician's" stage tricks to amuse audiences) doesn't exist. Anyone who says otherwise is lying and a lie is an obvious sin. So is seeking gain (money or other) from such a lie.
