i have a hard lump, about 2 inches diameter, deep in the back of my neck, to the left. it's right below the base of my skull, and it aches quite badly. I'm worried it's some kind of tumor, but can't find any information on the net about it. I'm going to the doctors about it next week, but i'd really appreciate some opinions from you all to help me understand what it could be. a week's a long time when you're worried!

You have large lymph nodes in your neck. They can be very sensitive to the touch. They can become enlarged, It probably means that your body has an infection somewhere and the lymph system is trying to fight it.

The fact that you are having pain with the nodule is probably a good sign, this might indicate that you have an infection that your lymph node is filtering out of your blood. If this is the case, you might see a physician to put you on antibiotics. However, another cause of enlarged nodules in your neck could be Hodgkins's Disease. This is a very treatable cancer if found in the early stages. Therefore, I would suggest you go to see your doctor and have him check the nodule.

I have had a lump in my neck for a few years, doctors have looked at it a couple of times. One doctor told me it could be leukemia and scaried me to death then I found out that wasnt true. All doctors seem to have different opinions about it but most just say it is nothing.

One thought may be that is is the spinous process of your second vertebrae. Basically a bone in your spine that is supposed to be there. It has muscle attachments that may cause aching. But is is a good idea to go to the doctor anyway. Just know that it is the largest spinous process in the body and you can feel it with your hand below the base of your skull. Check out this pic:

Take care.

I had this when i was a 4 year old.It was a swollen gland.
Try hot chicken noodle soup with some penicillin.
Hot green tea may help too.
