To travel within the US, you can travel on your drivers license but it is now recommended that you take your passport and/or green card. It is also recommended that you make photocopies of your immigration documents because there is a greater chance of theft of said documents and the inherent difficulty in replacing them.

You must carry a proof of your identity, such as, driver's license, state ID, voter ID and list goes on and on. You must also carry a proof of your immigration status in the United States, such as permanent resident card (Green Card), Employment Authorization (Work Permit). If you don't have a Green Card or Work Permit then a foreign passport with the Immigration Service Stamp (I-551 stamp) is required. Immigration Service considers green card or work permit as a proof a immigration status as well as proof of identity. Good luck traveling.
