I'm just taking a stab at it but maybe a form of meningitis? I know that the bacteria causing one type of meningitis lives in the back of the throat of healthy individuals. When it is infectious it can spread through nearby structures to the brain, and maybe to the eyes? Could happen. Maybe it was viral? Such as west nile virus. Hope this helps.
